Congratulations to kennel mate Bindi, MESHLACONS BINDI AT HOTNOTE (IMP USA) on attaining her Australian Championship today. Australian Shepherd Bindi is the second USA import to gain an Australian Championship in the last twelve months while being campaigned by us. Harrier SKYROCKETS MOONLIGHT GUNNER (IMP USA) completed his Aust Ch last year with a Best in Group under hound specialist John Bryson. Baby puppy Dalmatian Jasper SARASOTA BRAVISSIMO was awarded Baby in Group at Hobart Dog Club's Summerfest. Thanks to Kate Laycock for showing the Sarasota team today, while Tull kept an eye on my grand-daughter Brooke. VHCH SARASOTA TRIMMER HXAsd HXBsd brought 3 sons & 2 daughters into the world with no problems atall.

Congratulations to Lacey Wiltshire on attaining Perry's final points for his Championship on Saturday January 8th, 2011. Perry is the third Sarasota Dalmatian in less than a year to qualify for the Aust Ch Title, his mum Acanthus & Allison Clement's Little Diva became Champions in the latter part of 2010.

RESULT OF ANKC SURVEY RESTRICTING REGISTRATION OF BORDER COLLIES

Recently the ANKC conducted a survey to ascertain the opinion of registered Border Collie
owners as to whether they considered Ceroid Lipofucinosis, Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome
and Collie Eye Anomaly to be problems in the breed. The response received has indicated
overwhelming support for the following:
1.1 Ceroid Lipofusinosis be designated a controlled disease in the breed, requiring breeders
to establish the DNA status of all breeding stock born after 1st January 2005 for Ceroid
Lipofucinosis by testing or by parentage.
1.2 Litter Registration Limitations should apply for litters born from 1 January 2011 as follows:
o At least one parent of every litter must be DNA Normal for CL by testing or by
parentage.
o No CL DNA Affected animals are to be bred from.
o Acceptable matings are CL DNA Normal/Normal or Normal/Carrier where both
parents are born after 1.1.2005.
2.1 Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome be designated a controlled disease in the breed, requiring
breeders to establish the DNA status of all breeding stock born after 1st January 2005 for
Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome by testing or by parentage.
2.2 Litter Registration Limitations should apply for litters born from 1 January 2011 as follows:
- At least one parent of every litter must be DNA Normal for TNS by testing or by
parentage.
o No TNS DNA Affected animals are to be bred from.
o Acceptable matings are TNS DNA Normal/Normal or Normal/Carrier where both
parents are born after 1.1.2005.
3.1 Collie Eye Anomaly be designated as a controlled condition in the breed, requiring
breeders to establish the DNA status of all breeding stock born after 1st January 2005 for
Collie Eye Anomaly by testing or by parentage.
3.2 Litter Registration Limitations should apply for litters born from 1 January 2011 as follows:
o At least one parent of every litter must be DNA Normal for CEA by testing or by
parentage.
o Acceptable matings are CEA DNA Normal/Normal, Normal/Carrier or
Normal/Affected where both parents are born after 1.1.2005.
Effective from 1 January, 2011 breeders of litters whelped on or after this date will be required
to comply as a prerequisite to registration of any litter. Any parent whelped before 1 January
2005 is excepted. Dogs must be positively identified, preferably by microchip, prior to being
tested.
The Genotype for each condition may be determined by DNA testing or by parentage. All
progeny from a DNA Normal to Normal mating for each condition/disease will be DNA normal.
For CEA all progeny from a Normal to Affected mating will be DNA carriers. To be declared
Normal by parentage for any of the three conditions, the DNA genotype Normal of the parents
will have to be recorded on the ANKC database. Official results submitted to the database will
only be accepted where the DNA sample sent for testing is from a micro chipped animal and
was taken and identified by an authorised collector (eg: vet, breed club official). At this stage,
further DNA testing or profiling to verify parentage will not be required but breeders are
reminded that a litter registration application is a legal document. A majority of registered
owners within the breed responding to this survey were in favour. Each of the above six items were considered separately

Herding Clinic Reminder

Anyone who is interested in having a taste of herding is welcome to come to the clinic tomorrow at Penna. Kerry Webb has kindly facilitated the clinic and mowed the A Course for Ducks 9.00am for Intermediate A and B Ducks, 10.30am Intermediate A and B Sheep Introduction to Herding (Sheep and / or Ducks) starts at 12.30am. WARNING THIS CAN BE ADDICTIVE BYO refreshments & comb to remove grass seeds from dogs afterwards. It's been such a bad season for grass seeds here in Tasmania, Tull has spent hours at our vets removing them from ears, noses, toes and tummies she has resorted to practicing mostly on ducks instead of sending us out in the paddocks. Never thought I would hear her say that the drought had certain advantages but we did have a few seasons without so many grass seeds. Sarasota Shooglenifty

Let me introduce my grandson Shaun. What a little ripper he is. Like so many good border collies he is a tri-colour (like me). His dad is Zeal who is a son of my half sister Freya and his mum is Sybil who is my daughter from Minke which means Shaun represents some of the best herding lines in Tasmania. Shaun is already demonstrating potential, he is confident and observant. He doesn't rush in chasing stock but maintains their respect by keeping off yet holding his ground, not afraid to get his feet wet either! Shaun's parentage was determined by the use of genetic testing. Both Freya and I carry a lethal autosomal recessive gene for Neurological Ceroid Lipofucinosis which we inherited from our mother. Dr Alan Wilton of the UniNSW identified the gene and developed a DNA test so that we can be bred to clear partners and our natural working ability is not lost to the breed. Both Shaun's parents are clear for NCL, TNS and CEA/CH so he is clear by parentage. Shaun has a very adaptable temperament, he started the New Year by visiting patients in the Royal Hobart Hospital ~ he hopes one day to become a Delta Dog like his half sister Ms Swift.

Rescue Dogs Hit the Stage for '101 Dalmatians Musical'

It's great to see rescue dogs getting such a fantastic second chance in THE 101 DALMATIANS MUSICAL which is a Broadway theatre experience for the entire family… about what it means to be a family... canine and courageous. More than a simple story about good versus bad (Dalmatians Mr. & Mrs. Pongo against Cruella De Vil and the Baddun brothers), this Broadway musical shows how a family bands together to overcome every hurdle and hardship in the most difficult times. Many dalmatians are aquired on impulse and are not as forunate as the dogs featured in the musical when they need rehoming. The 101 Dalmatian Musical Home page addy is below:

Since Christmas has passed, the secret is out at Sarasota, that we have a litter of gorgeous dallie puppies by SARASOTA DEVIL'S DUE from SARASOTA ACANTHUS.

We are pretty cautious about allowing puppies to be given as presents, prefering the person who is to be the owner of the dog to be involved in the decision making process. One of our puppies is going to a home which is extremely dalmatian savvy, having trialed Bhalgair Southern Comfort CD ET, who is still going strong at 10 years of age now competing in Rally O. Here is a pic of little Prada who is going to join him at his address in Dalmatian Court. Now that's a pretty cool address! (If you're a Dallie)

Milestone in Herding

Members at Wednesday's Special General Meeting of the Tasmanian Canine Association voted to adopt a Sporting Register. Tasmania only has a population of half a million and the Herding discipline has been disadvantaged by not having Sporting Register dogs included in competitions. We hope this decision will increase the numbers of participants and standard of competition, thanks to everyone who attended and don't forget the trial next week-end at Penna with Toni Simmons, Trudi Kingston and Rod Garlick judging.

I hear that 9 of the dogs from the Tassie teams came home from Sydney with flyball titles. Maudie's Jeanie SARASOTA SENSATION FDX HT was the first dog in Tasmania to attain a FD title & I reckon Greg's Echo SARASOTA WHOS ECHO is the youngest - he is only 13 months old - Congratulations Every-One - it also shows inter-staters how it is possible to organise travel to and from Tasmania - adding to the confidence to the organisers of the 2012 Border Collie National that it is all possible!
Yesterday was the first day of the Royal Hobart Show & members of the Tasmanian Canine Association manned a Meet and Greet stand, here is a pic of Freya promoting pedigree dogs to families. She had a busy day with heaps of school kids and farmers coming thru the kennel pavilion she is off to do some more PR tomorrow.

Andrew sent this great pic of Domino a Dallie we bred She certainly was well named. I love to hear the reason people select names for their dogs. You may wonder how I got my moniker..... well my Grand-Father's semen was imported from South Africa & at the time I was a pup Afroman had that hit "Cause I Got High" & Siggy didn't want Tull to call me Riley (she said there was a guy @ school called Riley & she didn't want a Riley sleeping on her bed) So Afro it was.

Colt foal for Carousella

Just after midnight our Hula Chief mare Carousella produced a big strong bay colt by Redoubt's Choice's son Decides. Carousella is twenty years old having been born in 1989, the foal is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Riley Redwing who was born in 1999 and the colt was born on October 9th, 2009, he will be the ninth named foal of his dam. The drought of recent years caused us to reduce our thoroughbred broodmare numbers drastically, such that this year we will only have two foals. We are expecting a Hemingway from the Orpen mare, Be Prepared, in November.

The Smithfield puppies are nearly ready to venture off to their new homes. Born on August 15th, 2009 by Dunorlan Uncle Arthur from Orabanda Popcorn they are an important part of our efforts at Sarasota to preserve the heritage of the Smithfield breed. Described by cynologist Robert Kaleski as:

"..a big rough-coated, square-bodied dog, with a head like a wedge, a white frill round the neck, and saddle-flap ears; he got over the ground like a native bear. Faithful enough, handy, and sensible; but he couldn't stand the heat and long trips. Besides, he bit like an alligator, and barked like a consumptive. The other faults were bad, but the last was a finisher. How could a man borrow any of his neighbours cattle with an advertisement like that..."
the Smithfield was more suited to Tasmanian conditions than those in the northern regions of NSW & Queensland where it was infused with other breeds to create the Australian Cattle Dog & possibly the Australian Shepherd.

The Herding week-end went well with my grand-daughter Brooke ( Sarasota Trimmer) qualifying not only for her Herding Championship but also her Versatile HCH at the BCCT Trial on Saturday with HIT Sheep & Ducks & Minke (Keanefield Dykevos Kate HXAsd HXBd HIBs) getting her final pass for her HXBd Title. VHCH Fidelis Mad About Ewe HXAsd HXBsd was HIT on both Sheep & Ducks in the WDCT Trial on Sunday. PT quallies were gained by the promising puppy Sarasota Sunburnt Country (at only 7 months of age), Sarasota Amber Flowers and Sarasota Stare if UDare HT. These join the long list of dogs ready to Trial who have been waiting in the wings for the Advanced bitches to achieve their Championships. Democrat, True Colours, Soul Purpose, Who Knows Who, Yandarra Quiet Achiever and Drovers Dan Kelly have all been treading water this winter. 2010 should be an interesting year for Herding in Tasmania especially when the Sporting Register Dogs compete. These dogs have been selected for working ability since the breeds were first recognised. ANKC registered Border Collies, Kelpies & Australian Cattle Dogs were developed from dogs registered with VWSDA & other like registries but emphasis was placed on type not working ability. In some ANKC lines the working ability has diminished by comparison with Working Registered lines. As things are at present in Tasmania the only basis on which the Sporting Registered Dogs owned by TCA members can compete is if they are desexed & Associate Registered - this means that their working attributes will not be preserved for the future in the gene pool which would be a tragedy!

Versatile Herding Champion

Congratulations to my half-sister Freya on qualifying for her Versatile Herding Championship at yesterday's Border Collie Club of Tasmania Inc Herding Trial. Freya's registered name will now be VHCH Sarasota Tried and True HXAsd HXBd HIBs. It was a great day trialing in spring sunshine, judges were Alison Cowin (NSW) & Kerry Webb (Tas) - Kerry facilitates trials and practice days on her property and kindly allows us to use her home for lunches and trial secretary's office. Tracey Lamb from Queensland won High in Trial on Ducks with VHCH Fidelis Mad About Ewe HXAsd HXBsd with the coverted perfect score of 100. High in Trial on Sheep was won by Sarasota Indian Summer who also gained her HSAs & HSAd yesterday, trialing on sheep for Brett & Ducks for Alice which makes her pretty special in my opinion. The puppy with potential - Sarasota Sunburnt Country - passed his Instinct Test so has now officially begun his herding career. More Herding Trials next week-end so stay tuned.

Judge Sue Chaytor from New Zealand has our breed at heart and understands the importance of "Fit for Function" in a working dog. She awarded Baby in Show to Sarasota Irish Mist, Minor to Sarasota Sunburnt Country, Puppy to Winpara Soul Dreamer, Junior to Bordalace Daydream Believer, Intermediate was RUIS, State-bred BIS, Aust-bred Hotnote Overlander, Open Flair Sprig of Heather (Imp NZ), Veteran Gr Ch TCH Borderfame Ima Believer CDX ADM JDM SD SPDX GD ET & Neuter to Fidelis Mustang Sally HIAs HSAd. Win TV filmed the flyballers, doggie dancers & duck herders demonstrating how physically capable and trainable the Border Collie is. New Great Grand Pups

Well after a very anxious few days Freya's Daughter Tehya gave birth to five puppies last night. My grand son Zaffer is the dad so they should have great working potential. I hear there are two Blue Merle girls, a Black, Tan & White Boy & a Red & White Girl & a Red & White boy, all going well I'm told. Zaffer is Clear by Parentage of NCL, TNS & CEA/CH. Tehya is a NCL Carrier & Clear TNS & CEA/CH, because NCL is a recessive gene the little puppies can not be affected as Zaffer is Clear. They will be Clear TNS & CEA/CH by parentage. Well my old mate Tyrone has been living in suburbia enjoying the good life but despite having a great big garden and walks with his humans he has decided to take himself on his own walks. Not a good idea with so many cars to dodge, he had a pretty close shave yesterday. Anyhow he needs to relocate to a secure yard. If ever Tull has time to die I reckon they will engrave WIP on her headstone instead of RIP. I have been nagging her to re-vamp the web-site and include our Health Test Data-Base for ages but she has had so much on, what with the Border Collie Club of Tasmania Inc Champonship Show on Saturday 12th, and the Herding Trials on September 13th & 19th, she kept telling me she had catalogues etc to do. Anyhow John took pity on her - we all know she is technically challenged - and he has completely up-dated the site. Thank you Johndy it's great to have the slide show with pics of when I was in my prime.
